MANSON'S
OLYMPIC DREAM ENDS IN PRELIMS |
||
|
Brenham’s Andra Manson came up just short in his bid for an
Olympic medal.
Manson finished just short of
qualifying for the finals of the high jump at the games in Beijing.
Manson cleared 7’4-5/8”,
after missing twice at the height. However,
he was unable to clear the next height, 7’6-1/4”.
Four other jumpers who cleared
7’4-5/8” advanced because they had fewer misses at that height. Manson entered the games as the third-ranked high jumper in the world with a jump of 7’7-3/4” at the Texas Relays in April.
Manson
was a two-time state champion for the Brenham Cubs and was a Big-12 and
NCAA National Champion while at the University of Texas.
He is also the first
Brenham-native to ever qualify for the Olympics. |

BUCCANEERS
OPEN SEASON AT SAN JAC |
||
|
The Blinn
Buccaneers
begin their quest for a sixth-straight trip to the NJCAA National
Tournament, Friday at the San Jac Tournament.
The Bucs are ranked #5 in the
2008 pre-season NJCAA poll—the same spot they held at the end of the
2007 campaign.
This version of the Buccaneers,
though, is young—very young. “We
have six sophomores coming back, but not a single starter”, said head
coach David
Rehr.
“We hope the sophomores can
take control, because they know the system, what is expected and the
legacy of the program. They’ve
paid their dues and know what all this is worth.”
Although not a starter last
year, Kayla
Schmidt
of Bellville is a pre-season All-American.
Schmidt averaged 9 assists per game last year as the back up to
Caroline Witte, who is now at Texas Tech.
Rehr says Schmidt proved she
can carry the load, based on her 14 assist against Arkansas-Ft. Smith in
the National Tournament.
Also expected to become team
leaders are sophomore outside hitters, Lori
Hunsucker
of Katy and Jennifer
Goodwin
of Nederland.
Two freshmen from Brazil, Cinthya
Roberto
and Hivya
Leite
are expected to have a major impact as well.
Last year, the Bucs went 35-4,
winning their fifth straight Region XIV Tournament Championship, and
finishing fifth at the National Tournament, their best finish ever.
The Bucs’ home opener is next
Friday and Saturday, when they host the Blinn Labor Day Classic.

CUBS'
SCRIMMAGE MOVED UP |
|
Coach Glen West admits, the Brenham Cubs have
a lot of work to do.
The Cubs hit the field for their first
scrimmage of 2008, Saturday morning against the Bellville Brahmas.
The Cubs, much smaller and less experienced
than last year’s edition of the team battled hard, but came up short on
the “mythical” scoreboard.
In the controlled portion of the scrimmage,
each team scored once. The
Cubs scored on a 70-yard run by Kendrick Washington.
During game-situations, Bellville scored
twice while keeping the Cubs offense out of the end zone.
“Things didn’t go very well for the
Cubs,” head coach Glen West commented after the scrimmage.
“We’re very, very young and Bellville has a really good team.
We’ve got a lot of work to do.”
The Cubs will scrimmage Round Rock Westwood,
Friday, before the season opener, Friday, August 29th at Cubs
Stadium against Mayde Creek. Kickoff
is at 7:30. The game can be
heard on KWHI beginning with the pre-game show at 7:10. |

CUBS
PREPARE FOR THE "UNKNOWN" IN 2008 |
||||||||||||
|
The 2008 high school football season has begun.
Practices got underway Monday morning for teams
across the state of Texas—including Brenham where the Cubs got things going
bright and early with the 40-yard dashes and mile run.
Monday afternoon the Cubs
had their first full workout. Coach Glen West says there are a lot of unknowns coming into this season, "If anyone has a good idea of what we're doing, they need to come tell me, because we don't know yet." "We know we have some good kids and great athletes. Our goal is to, number one--find our players; and number two--we need to build a trust with those guys. Along the way we'll learn how to play offense and defense."
"We are excited, and we're not not making any excuses. We'll be ready
when the time comes." One of the biggest question marks coming into this season is the situation at quarterback.
West says there are a number of possibilities, "We know that Kendrell Washington will play some quarterback for sure. But we look to have a dual quarterback system, because he brings some things to the table that no one else can, but he doesn't do some other things as well as some other do."
"I think there are two or three other guys who have a chance to be that
other quarterback. We'll just have to see how it shakes its way out."
The season opener is Friday, August 29th
at home to Mayde Creek. The District
18/4A opener is Friday, September 26th at Montgomery.

BUCS
#2 IN PRE-SEASON POLL |
||||||||
|
The Blinn
Buccaneer football team enters the
2008 season ranked #2 in the NJCAA Pre-season poll.
The
Bucs were 7-3 last year, coming off an undefeated National Championship
season in 2006. The
Bucs will open the 2008 season Thursday, August 28th against
the #1 team in the poll, and defending National Champions Butler College
Grizzlies. The
game will be played at Wichita State University and is being billed as the
“Battle of Champions”. The
Bucs’ home opener is Saturday, October 4th against Tyler. Three
other SW Junior College Conference teams are in the pre-season top-25;
6-Navarro; 14-Kilgore and 24-Cisco. Tyler
also received votes. The Bucs return six starters on offense and another six starters on defense.
Head coach Brad Franchione, who enters his fourth season as head coach of the Bucs, with 26-6 career mark, says he can't wait for the start of the new season. "There are tremendous leaders in this returning group and an abundance of talent in the freshmen class," Franchione said. "I'm impressed with their work ethic and their ability to listen and learn. That gets me excited about going into the season." Three
Buccaneer players have also been named pre-season All-American.
Quarterback Terrance
Cain, linebacker Prentice
Joseph and kicker Brad
Hicks have all been named NJCAA
Second Team All-Americans. Cain was an honorable mention All-American last year, completing 71-percent of his passes for 2185 yards and 22 touchdowns.
